Does anyone know if I would still get the refund for having a child? No one else is claiming me or my son, and I'm a single mother?

If you are a single mom then you had an income, unless you were living in a shelter or on the streets.
Welfare, alimony, child support, Social Security?
If you had no earned income, then you can't file for the Earned Income Credit, which might be what you are thinking of when you say refund.

Child support is not taxable.
Unemployement is taxable, except the first $2400.oo. EARNED income Credit E.I.C means you get a credit on earned money through work, no matter if you are issued a W2 or a 1099. In 2009, you will also had received $400.00 for MWP[make work pay]
Alimony is taxable.
Now if you live with your parents, they can take the grandchild as a dependent and You too if you are under 21
