I have a 2 month old, exclusively breastfed daughter. Her father and I were never married and he was not present until she was 4 weeks old. We're going to negotiate child support and visitation this week but I'm unsure what to expect as far as the visitation schedule goes. She has not left me for more than an hour and her father has spent little time with her thus far. Is it fair to expect him to see her only at my house for any length of time he wants? I've told him he is welcome as often as he wishes but can't take her yet. He seems to think he should get lengthy visits at his home but its just unreasonable to pump enough for more than one feeding. Also is there some requirement that I MUST change her last name to his? He refused to acknowledge her and did not come to the hospital, but suddenly wants her last name to be his and I find this unfair. Any help?

May I ask, what did you put on the birth certificate? Where it says Father, what did you put?

Thank you.

Also, what state are you in?

I left the father portion of her birth certificate blank because he was not there to sign. We live in Texas.

The child's legal name is a negotiation between mother and father. But without him marrying you, you will probably win that battle. And yes it is unreasonable for him to expect lengthy visitations until the child is weaned. What is likely is the court will order a graduated schedule that will increase his time as the child gets older.
