View Full Version : Can't Get Tub Spout Off

We're putting tile in a bathroom, and I need to remove an American Standard T6179/80/81 spout, but I can't get it to budge in the slightest. I have what is probably a dumb question, but I'll ask it: Do I need to first remove the diverter? I can't see how it would affect being able to unscrew the spout, but thought I'd ask. By the way, I want to be able to reuse this spout after I get it off, as it's in perfect condition, so hopefully there's a way to budge it without damaging its finish.

Hi Galanwarner...

Go out and purchase a STRAP WRENCH... perfect for this job... see image. They come in a rubber or cloth style (cloth style is stronger) and are available at all home improvement stores.

The strap wrench will give you the leverage needed and, if used properly, won't mar the finish on the spout.

Loosen counterclockwise... ;)

Let me know if you have questions...

Thanks but I finally got it off by simultaneously using my large strap wrench (which hadn't worked by itself) and a long, sturdy screwdriver inserted up the spout (with diverter removed). It's off, and all's good.

Wincity... the advice you give is a little more than contrary to the way things work around here as most people coming here are looking for advice that allows them to do the work themselves, so "find a pro" is not going to float as an answer, OK?

Galanwarner, glad you're up and running... all that matters.

Thanks for posting an update!
