I live in canada and my 22 year old son has been living here rent free for years. I have asked him to pay rent which he refuses. His father thinks I am crazy and wll not even begin to believe the issues that I deal with on a daily basis. My son has damaged my home by punching walls, throwing items, threatening me raising hands to me excessive yelling he just goes bullistic for no reason. I am so afraid to confront him as I so so believe that some day he will just snap... I know sounds like battered wife syndrome and yes that but as of yet without the battering. The thing is is that he is my son and I still love him so much and I do realize that him leaving would be the best thing ever. I have read siome of these blogs and I guess my next step is to contact a lawyer to ensure he knows that I am serious. His father who I literally have not bothered with for the majority of the past ten years is so arrogant that he thinks I am making this all up and defends my son... what is that teaching my son... as of today when my son literally exploded on me because I went downstairs and asked him if he wanted takeout I called my ex and said that I was crazier than what he thought for even thinking of speaking to the police... I am now in the room locled of course trying to decide what to do... these major blowups occur at least once a week and to avoid them I try not to speak with my son and when I do I think very carefully about what I say... I didn't think asking him if he wanted takeout would initiate such a reply... I have also had checks written off my account, credit cards used, attempts made to use my bank card... I just need someone to tell me its okay for me to protect myself and take legal action... it is like battered wife syndrome

Do you own or rent? If you own, whose name is on the deed? If you rent, whose name(s) is/are on the lease?

Yes, it is okay to take legal action. The next time your son acts out, call the police and have him arrested. Then file for eviction against him.
