Convicted of what? Speeding? Killing someone? Stealing 50 cents? And where -

At your sentencing hearing you can be immediately taken into custody and taken directly to jail. If the Judge sentences you to jail time it will be immediate and you will have to get your affairs in order prior to your sentencing hearing as you don't get to go home and get your kids taken care of while you are in jail/prison, etc. or someone to feed your pet or take care of your apartment. Best to get everything "taken care of" prior to this sentencing hearing.
Is that the answer you were seeking?

Hello l:
Every time I've been convicted, I went to jail... But, I didn't mess around with piddly stuff.

"Never steal anything small" as you'll do the same time for the same crime. Apparently messing around with piddly stuff seems to be in this same vein as well.
