View Full Version : Twins? Or am I crazy?

I am 22 and married and I found out that I was pregnant with an at home pregnancy test 1 week before my period was due. I went that night to the ER and got a blood test to make sure. The next day I got a call that I was only 3-4 days along and my hormone level was 20. They wanted me to go back in 5 days they did another blood test. My hormone level was 378. They said that it was very high and that I needed to go to an O/B when I had a chance. Well I have a doctor and I go on the 23rd to listen to the heartbeat. I'm now 7weeks along and my belly is pretty big but the rest of me is not. I have had intense emotions and symptoms. Twins only run on his side of the family, not mine. My mom took one look at me and said "oh it's twins". I would really like someone's advice on the possibility of twins. Thanks!

Don't worry, no ones ignoring you, haha, everyone just gets on at different times of the day, or several days apart. And no you aren't crazy. I think every woman wonders if she is having twins at one point or another in her pregnancy. As far the chances of twins, it sounds like it could be a big possibility from the hormone levels. And if you are getting big already, that could also point to it. However, you could just be farther along then everyone thinks. There are a few ladies on this site who have had twins (Myth for one) who might be able to give you better advice. I hope all goes well, and congrats!

No worries hun. I am in my 21st week of pregnancy, and I have to admit that I was starting to wonder too. In my first pregnancy they told me I might have twins or be farther along then I thought(I knew I wasn't farther along, my periods were very predictable.) so they did an ultrasound, and it was neither. Hahha. I was just going to have a big baby. Haha. This time around I started showing earlier, but that was because my muslces were already more stretched out from my first pregnancy. Sometimes women just show earlier then others. Anyway, just drop me a line if you ever want to preggy chat hahhaha. We'll ttyl hope that I helped.

Twins don't run in my family that I know of either. Have you felt a fluttering yet? Has your dr told you your measuring larger than a woman normally would for your dates? I found out at 12 weeks that I was having twins... If your having twins remember if their identical then it won't run in a family it is just a fluke of nature. A wonder loving fluke. Twins aren't much harder than a single child is believe it or not. Do you have any other children? Cause if not it's going to be really hard. The first child is always the hardest in my opinion. If you need any advice remember that we're here for you. Let us know what happens with the dr.

This will be my first child. I haven't been measured by the docotr yet because my doctor won't see people until they are at least 10 weeks along. I go to see him in 2 and a half weeks to have my first full check up and to listen to the heart beat. I was told how far along I am due to a blood test 5 weeks ago... they don't get the time wrong when they do it that way, right? Cause maybe I'm just further along then they thought?

I don't know for sure on this, but according to some of the searching I've done online, I have gotten the idea that the blood test gives you the levels of hormone, and if its higher then it should be according to your perceived lmp, then you are possibly farther along then you think. But that it can't giev you an exact date, just within a few weeks or something like that. But like I said, I don't know much about blood tests, and this is just an opinion from net searching. I am sure others could probably tell you more.sorry I wasn't more help
Calculating due dates is done by using your period.
It is calculated from the first day of your last period. Since the exact date of conception is almost never known, the first day of the last period is used to measure how old the fetus is.
Based on your last period, the estimated due date is 40 weeks from the first day of the period. This is just an estimate since only about 5% of babies are born on their estimated due date.
Next the due date will be calculated by measurement and/or ultrasound at your doctor's office. This is used more for women who do not have regular periods.

Are you taking prenatal pills? If not you really need to be. I would be looking for another dr too... but that's just me... if my dr didn't see me by the eight week mark and is to busy to see me to the ten week mark then he's to busy to give me the time and energy I need. I don't know about anyone else on this site but that would be my main concern right now. I am high maintenance when I'm preggy and with twins it was even worse. Keep us posted hun and I'm crossing my fingers that its not twins the first time around.

Well of course we care. We've all got to have someone to talk to and it would be nice to have someone around here other than myself with twins under the age of five... three... one even:D

Well, I went to the doctor yesterday... but no update on if it's twins or not. All he did was blood test and ask tons of questions. He doesn't do a sonagram until 5 months, so in about 2 months I will know how far along I am, and if it's 1 or 2 babies. :(

Hmmm. Did you ask him what he thought about whether he thought it was twins or not? Sounds kind of like he is unsure about the whole thing? Seems like he would have been able to find out and let you know... (atleast I am guessing so, since myth found out at like 12 weeks... )Sorry you don't know more about this then you did before! Ever think about maybe trying for a second opinion?

I thought about it, but my friend was delivered by him, and all three of her kids were brought into the world by him as well. He was really nice, and saw that my insurance will only cover 1 sonagram, so he's going to do it when the baby is big enough for him to check it out and also see what the sex is. He is going to listen to the heartbeat in 2 weeks to make me feel better. :)

Awww, I didn't think about the insurance issue. That makes a little more sense. But, don't let the fact that your friend was delivered by him waver your decision of whether to stay with him or not, as everyone's preferances are different, and there are lots of wonderful doctors out there. That being said, if you feel comfortable with this doctor, DEFINITELY keep him. Its all about finding the one you feel most comfortable being the one to help bring your baby safely into the world, and making sure you are both strong and healthy. Make sure you let us know what you find out at the ultrasound, I am excited for you! Its such a wonderful moment when you get that first glimpse of your baby moving around in there... (despite the incredibly full bladder, HAHA!)

See I was slightly bigger too at twelve weeks. I was also feeling movement around eight weeks... the only reason I know it was movement is cause I've felt it before. I looked at my hubby one night as I was crawling over him to go to the bathroom yet again and told him "I shouldn't be feeling like this yet". Two days later I knew why I was feeling like I was five months... hehehe... anyway. I would go jumping to conclusions just yet because you might just find out your further along than you thought. How far along are you now? Sorry, still dealing with preggy brain... lol... I'll use it as long as I'm sleep deprived from the kids. Anyway. I would say you have a better than average chance that there's two. It hasn't been confirmed by a medical professional yet so don't take my word for it, I'm just venturing an educated and experienced guess.

Its kind of funny, but they say to fight water retention, drink lots more water. Doesn't make much sense to me, but it seems to work. I am having a lot of the swelling and stuff this time around, and it seems that when I really push the fluids, the swelling and stuff lessens.

I should be getting the u/s in march. He's listening to the heart beat in 2 weeks (it took a little begging.. heh) so hopefully he will either hear 1 heartbeat or 2. I'm 11 weeks along now, and I started feeling what I thought was movement at 9 weeks. When I would lay down, it would feel like a fish was swimming in there. It still happens when I lay down, or if I'm trying to pay attention and feel it. But that would be way too early right?

If you are having twins, I think you definitely could be feeling movement. Myth said she was feeling it around 8 weeks. So I would definitely think you could be. As far as hearing the heartbeat, he may not be able to immediately hear both heartbeats. There are many people who don't find out they are having twins from hearing the heartbeat. The possitions of the baby's and stuff like that tend to make it abit more difficult in the beginning. BUT he could find them both really easily. Also, it could just be that you are very intuned to your body and can feel your baby move early. I have been feeling this little guy since week 9 too. And there only one in there for sure haha. I think he's just going to be big like his big brother was. (I am personally betting on twins for you tho;0)

Well, my husband was a football player all through college, and I was a big baby (10lbs). My husband is very fit and I am naturally thin but we were both huge babies... so maybe I'm just going to have a 10 pounder. :)

Hehe, you never know. Of course, my hubby was 10 lbs 13 oz when he was born, but his mom had gestational diabeties when preggy with him, so that is probably why. I was only about 6 lbs. and our first little boy was 8 lbs.(the doc guessed he would be 7 lbs. I was a bit surprised to hear he was a whole 8 lbs 21 1/2 inches haha) haha, but yeah he was right in the middle of our weights. So who knows. Also, a friend of ours is a big 6'2 several hundred pound guy, he played foot ball and the such, and he was a really small baby when he was born. He was just under 6 lbs I think. So you never know how these kids are going to grow haha. ;0)

So I finally got to listen to the heart beat! When the nurse first started searching, she found a heart beat right under my belly button. It was there for a few seconds and then was gone. She search right under my belly right on my pelvis area and got a very strong heart beat that was very loud (158 beats per minute). She said that it was really low to have a baby there if there is only one. She tried to look for the other one again, but couldn't find it... also, the doctor is now worried about my water retention. I've tried everything, but it just keeps getting worse. He said its because of my job. I sit at a desk for 9 hours a day. Anyway, what do you guys think about the heart beat(s). Was it just one echoing... or my heartbeat... or is it twins?

You are not crazy to have them at the end of the day the choice has to be yours and not anyone else you have to weigh up the pros and cons what ever you choose you will be right because it has been your choice good luck:)

If it was your heartbeat, you would know. Our heartbeats are much slower then a baby's. It sounds to me like you are a proud momma of two. Haha. Of course we won't know for sure until that ultra sound, but I would be very surprised if they find out it is just one. As far as the water retention goes, make sure you are drinking looooots of water(esp if its twins) and getting up and stretching your legs, walking around for a few minutes every half hour. I know that that is hard with a job, but eventually you may have to quit your job, esp if you get pre-eclampsia. So just be careful. Sometimes there just isn't much you can do. If there is any way to put your feet up on a chair next to you while sitting at your desk, that will also help. Not wearing panty hose or tight pants will also help with swelling nad stuff like that. Congrats girly! Don't you just love the sound of those heartbeats!

That is always a good idea!esp if hubby can't get off work to go with you. But now you can rewind it and listen to it over and over. I still get excited to hear it every time. They never leave it on there long enough for me hah. I would sit there and listen to it all day if I could probably. Maybe I'll have to invest in a stethascope.;0)so glad all is well.

I'm so glad I'm missed... lol. *wipes brow and sits at the comp for the first time in days* Ok.. I still don't want to jump the gun, but it sounds like twins. The only concern I have is that the first heartbeat moved. That is only a concern. I just wonder if it wasn't just one baby moving instead of two. It happened just shortly after you laid back to hear the heartbeat and that caused the baby to move. I just don't want to get your hopes up to have them dashed. Sorry it took me so long to get back to this... were teething, eating solids, and trying to crawl all at the same time. I'm just a bit pressed for time... lol. Anyway, I actually get to go soak in the tub and relax so... sorry ladies I'm outa here... hugs. I'll be back in the next couple day... I hope
