Check for head leaks around the injectors. Attach a cooling system pressure tester to the radiator, if necessary, to help locate leaks.
Combustion leaks. Blown head gaskets and cracked heads can allow combustion gases/fuel to get into the cooling system, which can cause the engine to overheat and smoke. White smoke is often an indication coolant is being burned. There are, also, sophisticated products on the market to test for combustion gases, when warranted.
