First lady Michelle Obama appears to have violated Illinois law -- when she engaged in political discussion at a polling place!

The drama began after Mrs. Obama stopped off at the Martin Luther King Center on the south side of Chicago to cast an early vote.

After finishing at the machine, Obama went back to the desk and handed in her voting key.

She let voters including electrician Dennis Campbell, 56, take some photos.

"She was telling me how important it was to vote to keep her husband's agenda going," Campbell said.

According to a pool reporter from the CHICAGO SUN-TIMES at the scene, the conversation took place INSIDE the voting center, not far from the booths.

Illinois state law -- Sec. 17-29 (a) -- states: "No judge of election, pollwatcher, or other person shall, at any primary or election, do any electioneering or soliciting of votes or engage in any political discussion within any polling place [or] within 100 feet of any polling place."

A top Ilinois State Board of Elections official tells the DRUDGE REPORT that Mrs. Obama -- a Harvard-educated lawyer -- may have simply been ignorant of the law and thus violated it unintentionally.

"You kind of have to drop the standard for the first lady, right?" the official explained late Thursday. "I mean, she's pretty well liked and probably doesn't know what she's doing."

WHITE HOUSE DEFENDS ELECTIONEERING

When questioned about the brazen nature of Mrs. Obama's campaigning, press secretary Robert Gibbs defended the action.

"I don't think it would be much to imagine, the First Lady might support her husband's agenda," Gibbs smiled.

Can't impeach a first lady (she wasn't elected)... she CAN however be charged and prosecuted for a crime.

FLOTUS has a problem with the law. She "voluntarily " "inactivated" her law license in 1993 ,5 years after... spending years getting a Harvard Law degree... getting her law license... taking the bar exam twice... and working at a prestigious law firm in Chicago...
She was placed "on court ordered inactive status" ( pursuant to Illinois Supreme Court rule 770).

The question has always been ;WHY ?
During the campaign her tale was that she was motivated by public service and was unfulfilled by her law career.

I did not state the nature of the conspiracy theories . When I say I take her at her word ,I can easily dig up quotes from the campaign where she made it clear she did not like law ;where she advised students to look for something more fulfilling than a job that makes the big bucks .

The fact that she thinks it's OK to electioneer even though there are signs at polling places that prohibit it can be chalked up to being a person of privilege thinking they are above it all.

Campbell's characterization of the conversation may simply have included his political position, that he voted "to keep her husband's agenda going," but not that the first lady had specifically encouraged Campbell to support Obama-friendly candidates.

Even if one of the other voters had mentioned their support for President Obama and the first lady agreed, she would still not be in violation of election statutes because she would not, in that case, have initiated the political conversation. The Chicago Board of Elections has not, at this time, made an inquiry into the matter.

Pallasch, of the Chicago Sun-Times, told Fox News the conversation seemed completely innocuous based on Campbell's recollection. "When I wrote the pool report and the story, it did not occur to me that Mr. Campbell's second-hand account of his mutually agreeable conversation with Mrs. Obama might constitute a violation of the law," Pallasch wrote in an email responding to a Fox News request.

The Chicago Board of Elections has not, at this time, made an inquiry into the matter.

Maybe they didn't charge her with a crime, because she DIDN'T commit a crime... Sounds to me like she was having a private conversation with Dennis Campbell... That's not electioneering. It's not even close... Now, I suppose some right winger, like Drudge can CALL this a crime, as right wingers are want to do... But it's not.

So FLOTUS ,who is on a campaign tour was NOT electioneering when she had a casual conversation with a voter who she urged to vote for her husband's agenda ? Nah .
It only would be illegal if a Republican were doing it.
