Well, the title says it all. Today I found my daughter's basset hound, Lou Lou dead in her usual sleeping spot.

She was only 6 and healthy as a horse. We don't know what happened. She was lively and playful yesterday, but today she did not come downstairs for her morning potty break. Well, I just chalked it up to her selective hearing that she would get every once in a while.

Early in the afternoon I went upstairs to go into the attic (she sleeps against the attic door) and was talking to her, trying to get her to move. She didn't move. She had passed in her sleep.

My other 3 dogs are mourning as well. They have been somber all day. I should have taken that as clue, but I didn't suspect anything. Kimmie, the rottenlab (rottie lab mix) has literally been upstairs sitting where she usually sits next to Lou Lou, and has been crying. That brought tears to my husbands eyes. I don't think I've ever seen him cry until that moment.

I'm so sorry to read about Lou Lou, especially since he was still a youngish pup. We lost our top cat last year, and that threw the entire household (including the other cats) into a tailspin. My thoughts will be with you all during the coming days.

I'm sorry J, it's a horrible thing to have happen at the best of times, but when you have no answers it makes things worse.

I know it's not something you would be thinking about now but please make sure you keep all of her old things (collar, bowl etc) They will be a huge comfort in a few weeks time.

J, I'm so sorry for your loss. I'm not ashamed to admit that I cry at the passing of all of my dogs. We let ourselves get so very attached to them just like kin. It's a beautiful relationship between us and them isn't it?

God bless.

Wish I had the words to say, all I can say is my heart goes out to you. It is very hard to lose a pet as they are just as much a member of the family as a person is.

You shall see Lou Lou on the Rainbow Bridge waiting all of you.

Hugs

J, I haven't been on the site much lately and have not had the time to check out the dogs forum in a while. I just decided to take a quick look tonight. I guess subconciously I knew there was something I needed to see.

I am so very sorry to read about Lou Lou's sudden passing. Please don't beat yourself up over not noticing her sooner. Due to her age, my thought process would have been the same as yours.

I will repeat Mogrann's sentiments -- my heart goes out to you and your family. If you feel like talking, you know I am here for you.

Thank you all so much. It seems Little J (my 8 year old) is taking this harder than R. We got a new sofa tonight and he was excited to be here for the arrival. However, he decided that he would rather go to church tonight to pray for her.

He's at church now. Goes with a friend every Wednesday. Great program they have. Similar to Boy Scouts with badges and everything. They just learn their bible lessons while earning badges.

Life is better today... a little bit. Rae had a meltdown last night, but felt better this morning.

Little J broke down at church last night. My friend said that it was hard to watch, but all the kids there came together and put him in the middle of a HUGE group hug.

He got up this morning feeling a little better. He just said he hopes that he doesn't cry at school. I told him that it would be okay to cry at school if he had to. He's really trying to be a trooper.

J and family, I'm so very sorry for your loss. RIP Lou Lou.

Your favorite spot is vacant now...
No eager barks to greet me.
No softly padded paws to run
Ecstatically to meet me.
No coaxing rubs, no plaintive cry
Will say it's time for feeding.
I've put away your bowl, and all
The things you won't be needing;
But I will miss you little friend,
For I could never measure
The happiness you brought me,
The comfort and the pleasure.
And since God put you here to share
In earthly joy and sorrow;
I'm sure there'll be a place for you
In Heaven's bright tomorrow...

I have to spread the love Alty...That is so beautiful I am crying again.

I didn't mean to make you cry. :(

This happened so suddenly, I'm sure you're still in shock over it all. You know that time will heal, but for now, let it out. If you need to cry, cry.

I believe that Lou Lou will be waiting for you one day and you will see her again. For now, take comfort in the fact that she had a wonderful 6 years with a wonderful family that loved her. She was so lucky, and so were all of you.

Hugs J.

I've lost 3 dogs in three years, it's hard. I still cry over Tosha, she was the only one there for me when no one else was. Like suggested keep her collar/bed/leash, every once in a while I pull them out... As for the other dogs keep them busy, and keep yourself busy! Cry all you want, don't hold it back. They'll be good days and bad days, but it will get a little easier with time. I hope the void heals soon, and you can slowly move on. *hugs*
