My main shutoff water valve is frozen. I would like to try and replace the ball and stem without replacing the entire water valve. Is this possible?

Hi Robert, How do you propose to get it apart if it's frozen? Please describe the valve. Regards, Tom

Are you on city water?
Check with the water authority, some districts take responsibility for these valves.
I know they do in my area.
If not,you have to be able to shut the water off outside at the curb box. Again different water authorities have different rules for operating the valves before the water gets to the house.
Once the water is off it is simple enough to replace the stem and handle depending on what type of valve it is.
Sometimes you can lossen the packing nut a half a turn. Then turn the valve with a pair of pliers. Once the valve is partially closed tighted up the packing nut again.
Remember never leave a valve all the way open unless it is a ball valve. Leave it close half a turn and it won't seize up as often and won't leak when you need it.
Hope this helps.
