I have the same problem with my dryer that is only a year and a half old. It will start but then stop probably 3 seconds into the cycle and display the code. I'm thinking that something is loose within the wiring harness because it does work intermittently. As a side note, SEARS has been HORRIBLE with its response and customer service on a product that is a piece of crap. I'm ready to throw it to the curb. I called two service techs in my area and they both said they won't work on these machines... too many problems. Hmmmm doesn't that tell you something? I will be working on it this weekend, if I fix it, I'll let you know that the wiring harness or the thermostat or thermal fuse was the issue.

A friend of mine knows a sears tech. And he was told the motor should be replaced first to fix f40. Then if still has a problem change the motor control board. Sounds like its headed to the curb to be replaced with a non electronic dryer.
