It allowed Poor people to get their way paid to come here in exchange for an agreed upon period of servitude. After which they were free to go.

Basically a limited form of slavery.

Describe how? By boat. Crowded as cattle, which they were - human cattle or chattel, whichever you prefer to view them.

Some had committed crimes where they were living and were sent by the courts to the colonies - such as America or Australia or islands controlled by the British government. Some of them were sent by their families, having received a payment for their child (not much) and the child was shipped off. There also was voluntary servitude, which must have been a bleak situation for the person.
