Anyone tried upgrading Compaq laptop DVD ROM to DVD R/W? I have COMPAQ Presario 2100 which came with DVD ROM attached. I tried opening the bottom cover but I can't lift the cover ajar more than a 1/2 inch. Without opening the case, is there an easy way to take out the DVD ROM and replace it?

I had a old Compaq and found that at that time Compaq had a complete service manual that shows how to change any part of a laptop screw by screw, It's not easy to find but it's on the Compaq service or downloads area.

Thanks, Ernest carr. I checked out the site but it has a wrong instruction for my model which is Presario 2100 (2108US to be exact) series. What they show on the service site is for another model which looks simple to take out the DVD - one screw off and pull out.

Go to the links to Compaq site, I don't have all the information on your model but the first will put you on the right track the second is a example of Manuel needed.

I would download and save for future use.

Laptops are VERY proprietary. Very few parts are interchangeable. The only way you could upgrade this drive is if Compaq offered a replacement drive for that model.
What you CAN do is add a USB external drive.

Thanks again, Ernest carr. The 2nd link you gave me the exact steps to replace DVD drive. I had to remove the keyboard cover first. It was not intuitive unless you see the service manual.
