Hehehe... this sounds so familiar... I had the same thing happen... the compressor has a rotation sensor... tells the computer if the compressor speed matches the engine speed... if not... computer turns off the compressor to keep from burning up the accessory drive belt (fan belt)... this can be caused by loose or worn belt !

Also can be caused by excess moisture on belt... ie... splashes from puddles of water on the road... that was my problem... it only happened to me when it rained !

Putting on a new accessory drive belt fixed my problem. Also might need a new tensioner pulley (no big deal) if it's that old.

Of course... it could really be a compressor problem.

Replacing the relay is fast and inexpensive and if that fixes your car, you're a hero for self-rescue.
If that doesn't fix it, you need more diagnosis.
How is the belt? How is the A/C system? Fully charged with the proper amount of refrigerant?
When you select A/C, does the engine idle go up slightly (even though the light blinks)?
