A marriage is an exchange of vows between two people to share their life together. It does not require an elaborate, extravagant party to exchange those vows. Nothing more is required than formalizing the marriage according to the CIVIL laws where they live.
That being said, the act of committing oneself to another is, In my opinion a cause for celebration. It is something that family and friends generally want to share in.
So, the issue is really up to the individuals. The expense of the elaborate wedding, the pressure of arranging such a wedding etc. can have a negative effect. Or it can be a joyous process.
There is nothing wrong in either option, its what is right for the couple.
