The lint collects around the drum not in the lint catcher. We don't use it for fear of fire. Is there a defect causing this? What is level of mechanical know how to access the drum area and clean it myself?

Hi DONNANOBOA, Its real easy to clean a dryer,First unplug it be careful , unhook vent,If gas: turn off gas and disconnect flex line.Slide the dryer out and turn it a quarter turn so you can access the back. You'll need 1/4 or 5/16 nut driver, remove all those sheet metal screws, power cord retainer or may need to be removed. Now get shop vac and vac. You can see that alum. Duct and clean around heat elements check for obstructions, make sure vent going outside is free and clear, put back back on, hook vent, make sure of a good seal and be careful sliding it back in not to kink vent.plug in and check for good air flow at outside vent opening. Your problem sounds like a vent problem but worst case your blower wheel inside might be broken or slip on shaft oh yea check that too while back is open. Good luck, and remember to unplug first thing, 220v. If your bothered pulling that big plug turn off breaker first. Be careful
