I'm looking for a diagram that will show me how the variable speed cable is connected.

Hi,
Pictures are few and far between I am afraid. At any rate the part at the transmission has a Z-bend that attaches to the arm routed from the underside, up and flat.
The top is a different matter. There is a plate on the bottom of the control held by two phillips head screws. This must be removed. The cable end has a barrel-shaped end that comes out by lining it up with a slot and moving downward. The new one goes on in the reverse manner. It also has a threaded ferrule and the thumbwheel. The thumbwheel should be turned fully downward tord the transmission end. The threaded ferrule will have a raised ridge around it above the threads that will fit in a slot in the control housing(usually there are two grooves and the upper one is used with a new cable.) The cover and the two screws are replaced to hold everything in place. Then the thumbwheel is turned to properly tension the cable for engagement.
Peace,
Clarke
