I have had my wages garnished for the past year. I have recently become the head of household, as my husband's business has closed. He is not working and has no income coming into the house. I still have about $5000 of the debt remaining. Can I file a petition to stop the garnishment until he begins working again? Also if I am changing jobs how do I file that?

Believe it or not once you change jobs the people having the garnishment of your wages will have to start proceedings all over again. The garnishment paperwork would be applicable for your former employer - not your new employer. It will take them sometime to figure out just where you went and apply to the Judge for another garnishment order. It could be months until they get the new paperwork in place again. Or if you wish you can inform them of your new job and save them the hassle involved in finding out where your new job is.
You can motion the court for a reduction in your weekly garnishment fee since you are now head of household. You can't have them just "stop" the garnishment until your husband starts working again. You can have it reduced though.
