Yesterday I noticed a painful red bump behind my knee. Then I noticed another one on my back this afternoon in school. And when I got home I was feeling my scalp and noticed a weird bump on my head. My dad looked at it and said it was weird and dark red. Is it something that I should worry about?

How big are the bumps?

I really don't think this is any concern right now since they are so spread apart. But if it does not go away in a couple of days you should see your doctor.

Usually if it were something to be concerned about the bumps would all be right around the same place. Take chicken-pox for example: they usually have little bumps that are around the abdomen.

If they are not in the same general area then they should be nothing to worry about.

I think its serious now. About 4 or 5 more bumps have popped up. They're itchy and get very sore when I scratch them. I also noticed a lump behind my neck, fairly big too.

Hi Kashumz,
Is the lump on your neck at the base of the skull or lower? The back of the knee could be indicatative of some sort of lymphatic activity, as could swelling at the base of the skull. You haven't started any new medications lately that you might be having an allergic reaction to have you?

kashumz
Dec 16, 2006, 07:08 AM
No.

And The lump is about halfway down the back of my neck.

Dec 16, 2006, 07:13 AM
It's really hard to say what it could be. Are the lumps fairly uniform in size, and if so, could you tell how big? Are they fairly round, or irregularly shaped? If it is getting much worse since yesterday, you might want to have a doctor look at it just to be safe.

kashumz
Dec 16, 2006, 07:15 AM
It's round. I guess about a dime or nickel would be the size of it.

If I had to venture a guess, I would say they could possibly be Hives. Other than that I'm kind of at a loss. I will try to find a good photo online for comparison.

I was asking my friends about it and they said I might have mono.

I Don't WANT MONO.

Thomas1970
Dec 16, 2006, 07:36 AM
I'm not sure if it's mono, though I don't know a great deal about the illness in general myself. It is usually accompanied by an almost overwhelming sense of fatigue though, among other symptoms.

Here is a link for mono symptoms:

That doesn't match what I have. :l

If in fact they are Hives an antihistamine such as Benadryl would probably relieve much of the symptoms, though you'd definitely want to get a proper diagnosis first. Anything you might have been exposed too that is causing an allergic reaction?
Hopefully J_9 will be around soon. See what she thinks.

My mom has been using a different laundry detergent for a while, but I don't know if that's the cause.

Recently I started using a new body spray. I was thinking it might be the spray. The day after I had put it on the sores started showing up.

What worries me the most is the lump behind my neck. You don't think it's cancer do you? My dad says it might be a lipoma or a cyst. But I don't know.

Is there an age limit to this site?

Normally you need to be 13 or older for forums.

And I'm only 12. :l

Thomas1970
Dec 16, 2006, 08:14 AM
It is very possible it could be the body spray. Possibly even the detergent. I have a twin sister who is very sensitive to all sorts of cosmetics. She has to be very careful in what makeup she uses.
No, definitely not cancer.
Nope, no age limit as far as I know. Everyone is welcome here. :) The rules are posted somewhere, but I'm not entirely sure where, there is probably a link somewhere on the homepage.

Well. My dad is going to make an appointment for me on Monday when they doctor's is open. I'll see what they think.

I just hope it's not terminal or something.

And I hope I don't have to take big pills.

;-; hate pills.

Okay, did I read MONO? No, this is not mono as it would start in and around your neck and cause you to be tremendously tired. You would have a fever, sore throat, and be very tired. There are other symptoms, but they have to be diagnosed by a doctor through a blood test. So this does not sound like Mono at all.

It could be an allergic reaction but probably not to the laundry soap because then you would have a red rash wherever the clothes were touching you, and it would be terribly itchy.

I tend to lean toward the body spray if I were to venture a guess. I want to reassure you that I don't think it is cancer at all. I am happy to hear that you will be going to the doctor though, that will get it figured out better than we can.

If you get medicine, all of it can be in liquid form. You can ask the pharmcist/chemist to fill your prescription in liquid so you don't have to swallow the pills!!

Dec 16, 2006, 08:31 AM
Good. I'm glad to hear you'll be able to see a doctor. That would be the best thing.
No, you'll be totally fine I'm sure. I really doubt it's anything very serious. Hopefully J_9 will respond to you later.
They may end up giving antihistamine (allergy medication) or antibiotics for a brief time, or something, depending on the cause -- but that would help you to feel better, and I'm sure it wouldn't be for long if they did.
Try to let us know after Monday how you're doing, and what the doctor had to say. I hope you feel better soon. Enjoy the holidays. :)

The lumps are rasied and filled with fluids... o.o

J_9
Dec 16, 2006, 08:39 AM
Hmmm, where are they again? Behind your knee, your head, and your back? You only have 3?

kashumz
Dec 16, 2006, 08:41 AM
I developed more last night. There's one on my neck, 2 on my back, 1 on each arm, one behind my knee, and 2 on my scalp.

They keep popping up.

Hi, Thomas, glad you are here too.:D

Now, let's see, do they itch?

kashumz
Dec 16, 2006, 08:49 AM
There's an open and a closed one on my cheek, one on my forehead, and one on my left temple.

kashumz
Dec 16, 2006, 08:50 AM
Yes they do. But if I scratch them they pop and get very sore.

J_9
Dec 16, 2006, 08:52 AM
Have you ever had chicken pox?

kashumz
Dec 16, 2006, 08:54 AM
No. But chicken pox aren't rasied fluid filled sores, are they?

J_9
Dec 16, 2006, 09:10 AM
Yes, chickenpox are raised sores with clear fluid.

I believe you have chickenpox. I know I said in one of my earlier posts that I did not think this was the problem. But I have since changed my mind. Where I live there are MANY kids your age that have them right now.

So, best you can do, even the doctor will tell you this. Take cool baths, take benadryl for the itching, there is a lotion called Aveeno that can be used for the itching too.

But I do believe you might have chickenpox

Thomas1970
Dec 16, 2006, 09:17 AM
Actually, yes, they do become blisters. Though commonly a bit smaller, they can reach the size of a dime. If they are chicken pox, you definitely would not want to scratch them, as this could causing scarring upon healing. As well, make sure your parents do not give you aspirin if there is any chance you have this, as this could cause some complications. Tylenol or Advil would likely be okay though.

Thomas1970
Dec 16, 2006, 09:20 AM
Adding oatmeal to a bath can be good for the itching as well.

J_9
Dec 16, 2006, 09:20 AM
Thomas is right. Any person under the age of 16 should not take anything with Aspirin in it.

Do not scratch as Thomas said, it will scar. Also, this is highly contagious, so you will be out of school for a while if it is chickenpox.

You should get bed rest, tylenol or advil will help with any fever you might get. Your mom can make a paste of baking soda and water to put on the "bumps" to help relieve the itching.

Can chickenpox pop?

Why are they called chicken pox anyway. Did they originate in chickens? XD

The lump behind my neck is not like the sores, it's the color of my skin.

kashumz
Dec 16, 2006, 09:30 AM
I took aspirin yesterday for a headache.. :l

J_9
Dec 16, 2006, 09:48 AM
Just one aspirin won't hurt you, just don't take any more until you are at least 16. You can take Tylenol, Advil or Motrin though.

I don't know why it is called chicken pox, maybe Thomas knows. There are many reasons, but it has nothing to do with chickens.

Thy lump behind your neck may be an enlarged lymph node. This is common with chickenpox.

Just do a Google search and you will find out A LOT about chickenpox.

Dec 16, 2006, 09:49 AM
It was a chewable children's asprin. I don't think that will do me any harm.

Thomas1970
Dec 16, 2006, 09:57 AM
I have no idea why it is called Chicken Pox. :)

J_9
Dec 16, 2006, 10:00 AM
It won't do you any harm. But don't take any more. Aspirin, even children's Aspirin can cause an illness called Reye's Syndrome. It is especially dangerous if you take aspirin and have chickenpox. This is a very dangerous illness, so your parents should not have any form of Aspirin in the house until all kids are over the age of 16 - 18.

DO NOT TAKE ANY MORE ASPIRIN!! NOT EVEN PEPTO-BISMOL IF YOU GET A STOMACH ACHE!! Pepto has aspirin in it.

Tell your parents that they should get rid of all aspirin products in your house. Use tylenol, motrin or advil instead.

Here's the answer! This one is interesting. :)

I guess if you pop them you get something akin to Hummous? :)

That's an interesting link. Any one of those seems plausible. I have no idea which one of those is correct. :)

J_9
Dec 16, 2006, 10:16 AM
If there is even a correct answer?:rolleyes:

However, I cannot stress how important it is for a child NOT to take Aspirin!

Reye's Syndrome is noted to happen if you give a child who has chickenpox aspirin. This is a VERY dangerous illness, and I really prefer not to get into just how dangerous it actually is!

Aspirin or any aspirin containing product should ONLY be given with a doctor's prescription to children under the age of 16 - 18.

Thomas1970
Dec 16, 2006, 10:40 AM
I'm in total agreement here. Please listen to J_9, she most definitely knows what she is talking about. Please tell your parents not to use aspirin anymore.

My parents already know. My dad was upset when he found out.

And Im an only child. ;]

Can I take children's advil and such?

J_9
Dec 16, 2006, 01:47 PM
Yes, take advil, motril or Tylenol, get the aspirin out of the house!!

kashumz
Dec 16, 2006, 01:49 PM
The aspirin I took was Bayers.

And one of the pox I had on my chest popped.. but now there is something hard, like skin sticking out of it, and a pink ring around it..

Are you better? What did your doctor say? How old are you?
