I have never been in trouble for anything in my life. I am 31 years of age and borrowed a friends 4-wheeler while he wasn't home. The atv quit working and I let it in the woods. The next day I went to get the atv and take it to get it fixed at my brother n laws. A neighbor seen me take the atv there and thought something was suspecios so they called the police. The police came and got the atv. My friend got it back but now I am in trouble for it.

First, borrowing something without permission from someone who isn't home is called "stealing" and you are old enough to know better, so you should stop sugar coating the story. It will help if your friend sees that you recognize you did the wrong thing and you apologize for it. "Man, you're so right - I never should hace taken it without asking and I am very sorry, particularly since it broke down and all. How can I make this right?" Then be willing to do what is reasonable. He may expect you to pay for the repairs, which would be entirely appropriate. You should offer. It would probably end the whole thing. As for what the punishment is, it depends on where you live and what the rules are there. And have you been charged with a crime by the police or is your friend suing you for damages? Whether it's criminal or civil makes a difference. Another thing that makes a difference is the value of the object. If it's not a valuable ATV, it may be a misdemeanor for which you might get community service.
