We have gone through some changes with our Akita. 1. Our 2 year old Akita is a rescue dog from abusive family/ Very tramatized. We have had Akita for 1 1/2 years. 2. His best friend ( black lab 8 years old) just died of bone cancer. We told Akita he was the big boy now 3. We just picked up ( 1 week later) another puppy, 1 year old from the kennel. We told Akita he had to watch over the new puppy and teach him everything that his best friend taught him. He was so happy. 4. New Puppy contracted Kennel cough, gave to our Akita. 5. Akita hasn't laid down or slept for 2 days he falls asleep standing up and falls over. He won't eat he won't even wag his tail. What can we do?? LC

You take him to a Vet for treatment OR, if you've taken him to the Vet, you follow the Vet's instructions.

Kennel cough can be very serious.

If your Vet is closed find an emergency clinic.

One very important thing: take him, the Akita, to the vet. What did you do about the kennel cough in the new pup? Sounds like there is more going on with your Akita then kennel cough.

Kennel cough treatment is necessary when your dog contracts kennel cough from an airborne virus or bacteria. It is one of the most common infectious diseases in dogs. Usually several types of virus or bacteria need to be breathed in by the dog to get a case of kennel cough.

I agree with the above two posts. Take your (is he an Akita or his name is Akita?) dog to the vet. Some people say raw honey is a good treatment for kennel cough, I would suggest talking to your vet.

One sure fire way to see how far the KC has come, is rub his larynx, if he expels mucous or any other substance, he will be in a higher risk for developing pneumonia, and may be fighting another infection some where else as well. Often distemper is mis diagnosed as KC.

How long has your dog had the kennel cough? And who diagnosed this?
