Taurus is alright. H&K is better.
I still like my Colt.
Taurus is actually making a comeback these days. Their pricing and quality of guns has gone way up. Mostly that's the semi-automatic ones. Im not sure about the wheel guns. They have a really nice 1911 in the lineup and its at a fair price.

I've said this before. When every kid in all of North America could shoot by the age of twelve, there was no such thing as "gun violence." There was violence, sometimes guns were used, sometimes frying pans, sometimes chainsaws.
Important to note that while this is true, societal/familial behaviour was also quite different then as well. There is no question that this also accounted for a lack of "gun violence"; likely to an even greater extent.

Back in the day it wasn't as stressful and it wasn't as isolated in the big cities either. In today's times the only gun play children are getting is from video games. And not from the imagination like many used to have growing up. How did we all survive ?

Now I know I am late. Always late lately. I have seen why the discussion came here and all of that.
I personally do not own a gun but have family member that was in a gun club, owned several different guns. Always keeps them locked up in his safe, all registered.
There is nothing in my own opinion wrong with talking about guns, having threads about guns, discussing what guns you like to get or have , etc...
As far as all the deaths in Toronto. There is violence around the world. You know what most of the deaths are actually gang members shooting up other gang members with illegal guns and have to do with drugs.
AB, I like your signature and your picture and am glad that you will keep it there. No one has a right to tell you to take it off.
Even other people shared pictures of their new guns as a proud owner of a new baby which is nothing wrong with it.
Now there are accidents that happen. There are situations that happen that should not. The thing is it is all about safety and training. Knowing how to keep them safe and away from criminals that might steal them.
Obviously does not matter how strict gun laws are, criminals will always get their hands on them. It is all about personal choices and just because somebody chooses to have a gun or gun collection and etc in their home does not make them bad or wrong or anything else for that matter.
I personally would not carry a gun or own a gun and store it at home having a little child at home. Also my wife does not like the idea of any guns at all. That is fine.
It is called personal choice, but to say that no one should be talking about it on a thread or have pictures of it. Is pompous.

NooOOoooOo its not like that at all. If it were stolen or the serials messed up then they can't sell them. And for the stores its lost revenue. Plus all police departments run the serials when they are received and most states check them before they are sold too.

I didn't know that. My Dad had a Colt .45 automatic , chrome plated. After he passed away , my mom kept it under the mattress. She got sick and was in the hospital and someone broke into her house and stole the gun,
My dads fiddle and other things. I just about knew who done it. I was so mad and hurt I went to the boys house (he lived about ten miles from the house) and ask him for the gun back.
He lied and then about three years after that he went to prison for armed robbery. They never found the gun he used.

It was.
As for what he had to say, let me add that American Rifleman publishes at least a page (sometimes three) of instances where gun owners foil crimes in every issue.
When it was a monthly publication that was impressive.

I liked Ted Nugent before I knew he was for hunting rights. Loved his song about Fred Bear. Actually got to meet Fred Bear - my husband was buying a my first bow and we were down in Gainesville in '79. Got a nice compound bow and used that for many years.
I remember the American Rifleman magazine and that section where gun owners foil criminals. Reminds of when I was living in Spokane ('78,'79) and there was a rash of home break ins and robberies. Well, one guy broke into a home of an elderly woman. He thought piece of cake - she had a shotgun and shot at him, wounding him in the leg. As he was running out of the house, she got after him and dragged him back in, calling the police about the break in. She made sure she had "her man" for the officers. That was about the time I decided having a dog was not enough protection.

My favorite slogan of all time hangs by the doorbell at my best friend's mother's house. It has a muzzle-on drawing of a revolver (if it's to scale it's about an .80 calibre) and a caption that reads Don't worry about the Dog.

Good to have a back up if your batteries run low or don't work at all.
Always keep spares with you because they can go without warning.

I've been practicing a lot with my new Taurus PT738.
http://www.dgrguns.com/Taurus%20PT%20738%20hand.jpg
It's a .380: Not nearly as accurate as my Walther PK380 but a great pocket gun that I carry everywhere... Yes, legally: I have a concealed carry license :)
Frankly, I would NOT recommend the Taurus (or the Ruger) as the magazine release is too near where the thumb goes using a typical grip.
Next time I get a hankering for a new CC pistol, I'll look for one where the magazine release is in a better place.

Depends on the money you have to invest really. Many people like the AK47 platform. You can do tons of stuff with it and lets face it they are known for slinging lead downrange :)
SKS is another platform. The initial guns are cheap and you can customize them any way you like.
The only problem with semi auto's right now is they are so fun to shoot you can burn through ammo (expensive) like crazy. On the bright side any build your wanting to do no matter what platform you choose you have a great amount of choices you can make. They even have dedicated AR's in a 22 cal platform so they are cheap to shoot.

Welcome to the thread Rick J. Good to have your input and have fun!!

There are different types of bows. So if your looking to get into it you can find one like a compound bow that may meet your needs. But cuddos for trying. They can be a lot of fun.

Thanks for the input. I would really like to get an AK47. I think that would be my best bet. So that may be my next gun. I bought an SKS a couple of years ago for dirt cheap and it was in perfect condition but I added a lot to it and it was a lot of fun. When I first got it, box of shells was $3.95 per box. Now they are $6.95 per box. So the whole time I am shooting I am saying, "35 cents, 35 cents, 35 cents" It kind of hurts when you think of it like that but it is fun to shoot.

The only advice I can offer on a AK47 build is watch what you buy in the first place. I found out recently that the barrels came in different grades for accuracy. Another is ammo. But having owned a SKS you already know that. It pays off in the long run to shoot the modern non corrosive type. Plus not as much cleaning going on. The ammo for that platform is still at decent pricing so you can have a great shooter and still shoot it ;)

That sounds good then. I want to buy that one, I also want another 45 cal. or a 9mm. I have 2 45's but one I don't like and another one is about 65 years old and I would like to keep it to the side and get another one to play with. My 9mm is a Jiminez and I am not to impressed with it.

If your looking for a 1911 taurus makes a good one. They run around 600 us. Also it depends what you like. Real steel or tuppaware ;)
If you like steel then I would recommend a S&W 5906 for 9mm. Also baretta makes some nice 9mm too. 92fs are very nice :)

Remember to consider ammo prices.
I have a Walther P22 that I just love for the range or tin can shooting in the woods. They run about 4 cents each for a box of 525.
Of course the .22 is not going to offer me much "protection" but it's fun to shoot - and getting good with it also helps with my Walther PK380.
.380 rounds are about 40 cents apiece unless I can find them (which is rare) at WalMart for 19-23 cents each.
9mm and .45 rounds are even more expensive.
I love the .380 because of the decent price of ammo - and it's ability to put the bad guy down if I ever need it for that purpose.
As for a .45: Yes I know it's fun, but dang, those rounds are expensive!. and of course the gun itself is not cheap.
Just my 1.5 cents worth on the issue. I'm biased: I think .380 is the best bang for the buck (pun intended :) ) for both personal protection and fun shooting.
As for personal protection, remember this: If the bad guy is wearing armor, then it does not matter whether you have a .380 or a Desert Eagle .50.
Armor aside, 2-3 rounds into the center of mass, whether it's from a .380 or something bigger: Bad guy is going down.

RickJ... A lot the gun shows we have here maybe three or four times a year has cheap ammo. Kmart has some too. Some of the Army Surplus stores have ammo. You're right it's expensive... Kit

I usually buy my ammo at walmart for my .45 for about 34 cents a piece. (A box of 50 for $17.00)
I buy my 9mm ammo elswhere for about $10.00 for a box of 50. I usually go to knob creek a couple times a year and buy my SKS ammo because they usually have it cheaper.

I get mine by the case from AMMOMAN.COM d/b/a Discount Distributors (http://www.AMMOMAN.com)
I buy it by the case... between 9mm, 7.62 x 39 and .223 , I have a few other lesser used sizes I only buy by the box I use them so rarely. Like 8mm Mauser and 12 gauge.
Better to have more than you need, than need it and not have it.

Dang. I've checked the prices on all of the sites recommended above - and find that WalMart beats them all for 380 Auto rounds.
... so I'll stick with WalMart and keep checking their stock every few days on my way to the office, to build up my surplus. Thankfully, they were in stock earlier this week, so I bought another 200 rounds. I'll just keep buying rounds from them when they've got them.
To clarify, I'm paying 23 cents per round for "range rounds". They're 95 grain but have the flat head on them. No problem in my mind as I'm confident that even with range rounds, the bad guy will go down if he's hit in the chest with 2-3 of them.

Yep, I hear you.
And despite that I'm armed, I know the first and most important option if the situation warrants it: Run Away.
I'm no Rambo. I've never shot someone and hope to never have to. If running away is an option, I'll do it. If drawing the gun to make the bad guy run away, that's the next best option.
I hope and pray that I never feel the need to both draw and shoot.

I've never actually been in that situation where I had a gun... so yeah its hard to know for certain until you have been what you would do and how.
Yeah, it's a strange state of mind to be in at that moment.. particularly in retrospect. I HAVE been in a stituation many years ago where I was assulted by two bigger guys (no guns involved) and I was ready to kill one.. the other limped away on his own.. what stopped the incident wasn't any moral code or fear... It was a neighbor that came up from behind me as I started a started to pull a Mickey Mantle home run with the guys head with a steel bar, early enough the guy just got cold cocked and was hauled off in an ambulance (for his other injuries as well) because I never got the swing off in full before I was wrestled to the ground. And damn, that is a scarey frame of mind to have, because I was calmly ready to kill the guy at that moment. I've actively managed to avoid getting to that state of mind ever since... I know what I could do in the circumstance... I don't know how I would deal with it later. And I really don't EVER want to go there again. It was over 30 years ago... and I can remember it like it was yesterday. Thank god for several years of martial arts training.
But like you know... when you or your family is at risk.. particularly in your own house.. then all bets are off.

1> all handguns are pistols.
2> revolvers or semi automatics.
Here is a story, somoene pulled a gun on me, I knew the make and model of it, and exactly how it comes apart to clean. I released the magazine, moved the slide forward slightly, then caught the magazine before it could leave the gun with one finger, returning the slide to the rear, and slappled the magazine back into the gun afterward with my finger, and took the slide off the gun, in one deft motion, per the person I 'disarmed'. You can see something similar with jet li in one of the lethal weapon movies, but I did it first. But I know no one believes me. It is okay. As highest ranked martial artist in the world I am often doubted, I mean the guy did not even see take the gun apart, but he was standing there holding a frame, with a magzine in it

Good story above, not that I believe it, but good story.
But that is what they teach at the academy is that no one knows what will happen, which is why prisons try to be careful on who they pick to be in the towers where they may have to shot an unarmed person running. Not something anyone wants to do I am sure.
But I have had to pull a weapon on someone many times over my life and career and it is one of those things, if you are not sure you can pull the trigger, you have no business carrying one.
The story above is a prime example, if a weapon is pulled it should have been used if and when the other person did anything aggressive ( if that is why you have it pulled)
Which of course is why I am alive to day, the other people who have pulled one on me before, paused or hesitated instead of pulling the trigger.

Totally agree there... if you have it, or pull it out you better use it or the other guy WILL take if off you and use it against you. And the results of that won't be pretty.
Not many normal people WANT to be in the situation where they have to use it... they just don't want to the person that brought a knife to a gun fight. And if you won't fight for yourself or your family in your own home... then you forfeit rights to complain about crime.
Teach kids from an early age a real gun isn't a toy and they will respect it growing up... my father did that from a very early age... not sure how young... just young enough I don't remember when it was. Me or my brother never once played with a real gun even though we had several around in a gun rack. We knew what was a toy and what was real. They weren't locked and ammo was at hand...

It's a comman fact that when faced with danger and high adreniline levels our bodies tend to go to tunnel vision to focus on the primary target. So your feeling is consistent with science. That's why police officers train so much to eliminate that factor and to broaden their view to eliminate danger and protect the innocent.

I sold my Taurus PT738 and got a Smith and Wesson Bodyguard 380.
WOW what a difference!
The magazine release is much better (not where my thumb will release it when shooting), it's got an active safety and clearly it's much more comfortable to shoot.
Super accurate at 25 feet.
I played around with it at 50 feet and did fairly well, but in reality I'll never use it in self defense at that range.

It can drive a 16-D nail through a 2x4 at 200 yards. It makes construction a breeze. You can sit in your lawn chair and build a fence. Just get your wife to hold the fence boards in place while you sit back, and relax. When she has the board in the right place, just fire away. With the hundred-round magazine, you can build the fence with a minimum of reloading. After a day of fence building with the new DeWalt Rapid fire nail gun, the wife will not ask you to build or fix anything else, probably, ever again.

OK, I see this is a gun thread... and I'd like an opinion...
Guys I have my restricted firearms license (canada) and I'm looking into buying rugers SR9 series 9mm semi-auto pistol... but I can't really afford the 700+ (after taxes) price. The reason I want the sr9 series, well heck rugers 9 mm in general is because of the safety being on both sides *i'm left handed* and I don't want to buy a custom left handed gun right now... Anyone know of any other makes and models (not revolvers please, pistols only. Preferabally semi-auto) that has the dual sided safety that would be in a lower price range in canada...
This is the one I was looking at on cabelas.ca

Most modern semiauto's have dual safety. The trick is that if you're a leftie then you need to pay attention to the mag release. On some models when shooting with the left hand it can get easily released. Also taurus is making some fine weapons. They even have a new sa/da model out. Something that can come in handy under extreme times..

I'll take a look into them.. I have used the ruger SR9 series pistol. Found the weight to be a perfect balance for me, the size of the pistol is a perfect combination of length versus grip size for my hands and my likings. I am an avid gun lover but I'm used to more rifles than handguns, I've been to the range, and tried a few out, 22's, revolvers, 9mm.
I like beretta's brand wise, but I'll admit, Rugers weapons and Remington's are some of my favorite.

Yep, Coyotes are a huge problem a lot of places. And a problem in places people don't even know they roam. We even have them near where I am. And they WILL make a meal of someone's small dog or cat if they are let outside at night.
They are truly omnivores, and very active at night.
I actually saw one in my back yard a number of years ago... didn't have a camera handy and nobody believed that's what I saw then. And I'm miles from the closest undeveloped land.

Your right smoothy. Most people don't realize that they are everywhere. Mange is a big problem with them here this year. I've seen deer being chased by coyotes. The sad thing is. If the deer survives the chase, they don't usually survive afterwards because when a winded deer stays in the cold of winter they get pneumonia and usually won't last the winter in the first place

My uncle accidentally trapped a couple in WV, 20 years before there were even acknowleged to be in that part of the country by the Fish and Wildlife types.
He was a life long trapper and Hunter, and told him he was full of it when he called them. It was he that was right and they that was wrong. They actually told him he trapped somebodys dogs. Without even seeing them.
The ones you got seems unusually well fed. They are usually a lot leaner than they appear in those pictures. Compared to the few I've seen anyway.

They have almost decimated the deer and wild rabbit population on the mountain where I'm living. They've been stealing peoples pets bad. And that's why they are so well fed. In my area they breed with peoples dogs thus creating a larger heavier animal. We refer to these as coydogs because they are half coyote and half dog

My story:
My dad managed Dave Cooks Sporting Goods in Denver, and brought home two brand new 22's every weekend during the summer... I was 12. We'd go jack rabbit hunting in the eastern plains... One day, when my dad I were taking a breather, a little bunny ran up to us and stopped. My dad pulled his .45 and blew the tip of his nose away. The bunny just stood there bleeding, so he shot him again...
I grew up being a hunter, and hunted for years.. I loved it, and then I didn't. That damn bunny kept cropping up in my memory, and hasn't gone away since.
Yeah... An excon and his bunny. Whoda thunk it? Now, let some sonofab!tch break into my house, and I'd have no trouble blowing him away. Do I need a doctor?

No problem... Hunting isn't for everyone. You have the options of buying ready to cook meat these days.
I don't believe in killing animals just for the sake of killing them either. But things like vermin... and things like Deer and these have to be culled or overpopulation causes a host of secondary problems. Rabies, property destruction.. diseases for the surviving anmals.. etc. Which is the more humane path when you consider the alternatives?
Plus Deer make for good eating. But I'd have to be damn hungry to eat coyote.

I hate hunting! I especially hate it when people hunt just for the sheer fact of killing. Not for warmth, food or to stay alive. I also think snaring and trapping is disgusting and cruel. Wow, you out smarted an animal! I don't understand what satisfaction someone can get from that. But that's just MHO. I found a snare with a dead rabbit in it once, and the rabbit was only caught by his foot. So how long was he there before he suffered and died? My neighbors dog also got caught in a snare, he did die instantly, but I will NEVER get that image out if my head.

Hunting; whether for sport or survival, in my own opinion is an act of genetic dna, a sense of empowerment, a strategic situation with conflicting skills.
Genetic DNA- We have hunted for thousands of years, with the sole purpose of providing food, clothing and tools. This has been a way of life passed down from our fore-fathers and their fore-fathers and so on and so on... I believe we still have this ingrained in us to hunt and kill for the sake of meat, for the sake of clothing and tools. We as now-a-days these items are obtained in much eaier ways it's still in us to take part in hunting.
Sense of empowerment- The human moral is set to want to feel successful and victorious. When you hunt and successfully bag an animal this feeling is obtained. I don't beileve this is the sole purpose of hunting but it adds to the affect.
Strategic Situation- We are taught how to handle a firearm, we are taught the skills to track animals, understand their way of life, predict situations beased on animal tendencies and presumed actions. Hunting allows us to use these skills taught to us by mentors or our parents. Using a skill that is so nomadic yet important in our way of life. Eat or be eaten if you will.
The above are in now way the sole purpose of hunting. They are a collective thought from me on justifying why I hunt, why I feel it OK to kill an animal.
I do not agree with snaring as it presents torture to the situation. That same rabbit caught in a snare, I would have no problem shooting with a 12gauge shotgun.
Animals have did this for thousands of years as well. Do you disagree with a coyote who hunts and kills a white-tail? Granted it's for food but I eat the deer I kill. The only question I see here is the purpose behind humans hunting, our intentions and what drives us to do so. Do we have to have a reason? Do I need to justify myself?
Now, if someone was to just go shoot an animal and leave it there and not care to go get it and skin it, eat it, etc... then yes, I disagree.

I live in rural Nova Scotia, I grew up on wild meat, my daughter has grown up on wild meat, I guess I am not so opposed to hunting and eating, using the skin for a lively hood etc.. As I am just killing to kill. I don't want to get into this too much, because I don't want to insult someone I DO consider my friend on here. To kill coyote's because they have attacked is just wrong to me. It's like those people who have tigers and wild animals and make them do circus tricks, and when the animal lashes out, the animal gets killed. How fair is this? I think it's sickening. It's a wild animal, how do they expect it to act? I'm sorry I'm just venting...

"Is it a bad thing?"
The society is so eager to pronounce something as good or bad without asking if it's bad or good at all.
Before asking if an idea is good. Ask if it is bad. What are the bad outcomes of having a State gun? Usually by answering the "is it a bad thing?", you usually get your answer for "is it a good thing?"

Well, it's MORE than just mentioning it. They're going to enshrine it as their state gun. If they just want to be patriotic, and pay homage to an amendment, why don't they make a state newspaper?
The Browning automatic in question, is made in Utah. They say, and I don't doubt it, that it is responsible for saving MORE lives during WWII, than any other gun. That's wonderful. I'm still not sure if that qualifies for the making of an entirely new category of state honored items, like trees and flowers.

Personally speaking I would be against it. It only highlights it and elevates it to a point where it becomes focused on. Don't get me wrong it's a great gun and yes I own one. But I also believe that gun ownership is a sacred right honored in our constitution and that in owning a gun its as individual as anything else someone might own. Its not for everyone. And the ones someone may choose is not for the person next to them. Its is choice to make that your comfortable with.
And if you don't know or didn't know what ex was talking about like me, here is an article on it.

And several other magazines currently on the newstand which I subscribe too (not everyday but monthly when they come out).
And what the heck, everyone is focused on Egypt now and getting Americans and Canadians out of there. Talk about guns being involved, yes, lots of them. And, what is worse then the Cairo Museum being vandalized for gold. Curator says everything that has gone is gone forever. Guns are involved, yes, most definitely and this is not ended yet, possibly another war we all have to deal with.

Know how to get them into a motel room?
Grease their hips and throw in a twinkie.
Sorry. That was uncouth and sexist. But funny in my uncouth opinion.

More commonly called Morman. LDS is an acronym for the shortened version of the entire name of the church.
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints

Heck the mormon girl I went out with was built like a... I know what you're thinking...
Playboy model... I later found out she had three kids... a while after that I found out there was a fourth she never told me about...
I dumped her later after she pulled a week long Mz Jeckle and Mz Hyde routine. I just wasn't going to deal with that crap.

For those that may have been following this thread. AHMD has a gun board in case anyone (like me) didn't notice its creation.
