View Full Version : 1994 Camry no start/weak spark/intermittent fuel pump!

I'm working on a friend's '94 Camry 2.2 a/t. Car ran fine when he got to work in the morning; when it was time to leave, came out and it wouldn't start. At first, it had no fuel pump at any time, but must have had spark because it was trying to run. Tested the EFI relay under the hood and it was good; tested the circuit opening relay behind the glovebox and it was bad. Replaced it. Now... when I turn the key on there is no fuel pump, while cranking there's no fuel pump, but as soon as I let off the key the relay behind the glovebox clicks and pump runs for a few seconds. So it at least has some fuel pressure now lol, but it won't fire at all. Pulled the plugs and they were gas fouled... replaced them, still no start. Pulled a plug wire slightly away from cap as a friend cranked and it has really really weak looking yellow spark. Swapped out ignitor with a known good one--no start. Rotor is turning (timing belt had been replaced in the last six months anyway); tested coil and pickup coil and all ohms were within spec... distance between distributor shaft and signal generator was fine...
I don't know how I've managed to go backwards on this thing lol. Seems like at first I had spark, replaced a relay, and now I have no spark. I was careful when testing too... no sparks or smoke... yet lol:)

Check engine light is on when the key is on...
What am I missing? Got to be something simple... maybe... hopefully...

Thanks in advance!!

Most likely the coil. Even though they ohm out good, they're most common to fail. Examine closely for cracks as a tell tale sign.
Most everyone suspects fuel right off the bat on this issue. You can jump FP and B+ right at the check connector (koeo) and run the pump if you'd like and see if the pressure is there.

Thanks for the response! Hopefully I'll have some time tomorrow to work on it and I'll keep you posted!

When replacing the ignition coil, I recommend that you replace the ignition condenser as well. It's like a capacitor that absorbs the surges created by the coil and can wear electronically, just like the coil does.

Didn't have time to work on it today but did manage to pick up a complete used distributor out of a known good running car... figure we have a better shot at getting it running with good used Toyota parts than new cheapo parts store parts lol:)

Thanks for your responses so far!

Figured it out... oil pump seal started leaking and messed up timing belt... it sounded fine when cranking (not like timing was off) but I pulled the upper cover and found the problem. Should've spent the $4 for the oil pump seal when I replaced the belt:o

Thanks to all for your help!
