I bought a car about three weeks ago. I am financing through my bank, and I had to print out a check to give the dealer so he could fax it in. He still hasn't done this. I would think he would want the money as soon as possible. The loan expires on the 20th of this month. Can it affect me negatively if he waits too long?

How does one fax in a check?

Do you have a receipt that you wrote this check? If so, in the normal functioning world, then you've done your duty and what he does with it is is his problem, not yours. Now I'm assuming the check was a down payment. I don't see how that is connected to the loan with your bank if all your paperwork is signed and everything is up to snuff.

It's not a normal check, it's a check that my bank emailed to me to print out and give to the dealer. The "check" was written out for the amount of the car.

Also, yes I do have a receipt with both the dealer's signature, and my own.

Explain to the car dealer that unless they want to give you a free car, it has to be cleared the bank by the date.

But if you have the loan, why would it expire ?

Has he provided you the title ? One thought comes to mind, he did not have the title yet and is waiting to cash the check till he gets the title

I hadn't thought about that, Fr_Chuck.

I don't have the loan myself, the bank still has it. The "check" has to be faxed to them so they know where to front the money.

Oh I see. The check isn't a check and it isn't a down-payment. I have never heard of a bank doing something like that. So this check is for nothing but information for the bank? Weird - I would think a local bank would be familiar with local car dealerships and the like.

I also don't get why it would expire. Can you get the loan to yourself and then you give the dealership the money?
