If I get a notice from someone that they'll kill themselves, am I in any danger on a legal stance?

As in, me knowing and not reporting or trying to stop the act. Could this be taken to court and in what ground does the defendant stand?

And why would you NOT try to stop it, please?

Lack of ability for one.

Or say that the person who said it has a debilitating illness that'll give him/her a painful death in a short while so he/she would rather have a less-painful death in a country that doesn't allow for euthanasia.

Still, can you please inform me jmjoseph? I'd highly appreciate it.

Please be patient. Someone here with a legal background will soon come and try to help you. I was just trying to get some more information.

I apologize if I came across as being aggressive. I have a tendency to do that when speaking English.

Thank you.

I just want you to know sometimes it takes a little longer to get the answer that you want and deserve.

Unless you are in a position of authority you have no legal responsibility to report suicide threats.

Moral responsibility is another thing - but this is a law board.

I don't know who you think would bring civil or criminal charges against you - ?

Family of said person in case they found out I or a person who had knowledge did not report.

Is there a difference in law between the US and Europe?

What Country in Europe? I am not aware of any obligation to report a threat of suicide anywhere. In fact, I can see you reporting such a threat and finding yourself in legal difficulties if the person is joking, having a bad day, whatever else is going on.

I Googled but could find enough information to answer your question. In the U.S. a professional (teacher, counselor, minister or priest, psychiatrist, etc.) is required by law to report anyone they know who is threatening to harm himself or others. A friend or associate is not legally obliged to report it, but there certainly is a moral obligation. And the police would rather go on the call and err on the side of caution than have to report to a family that a loved one has committed suicide.

Have you found out any more, JK, about the person who you think is considering suicide? Something else you could do is call a hotline number and ask this very question. I'm sure someone will be glad to help.
