View Full Version : Ceiling fan installation with remote and multiple wire sets

I'm installing a fan/light combination that uses a receiver plus remote. The receiver has black and white "AC in" cables as well as black, white and blue "AC out" cables to power the fan and light. Instead of a simple black and white wiring setup coming from the ceiling I have three separate bundles with black and white wires each, one of which has an additional red cable. Note that the light that was installed before attempting the installation of the fan/light combination used only the red wire plus the three white ones (the black wires were capped off).

After starting by connecting the receiver's black wire to the celing's red one and white to white (as was the case with the light fixture), which did not work (i.e. no response to the remote input), I connected the three black wires coming from the ceiling (previously capped off) and capped off the red wire. This way the fan was activated by activating the circuit. In addition, if I connect the ceiling's red wire directly to the blue wire coming from the fan/light (in effect bypassing the receiver) I can switch the light on and off, yet the receiver still does not respond to remote input.

What should I do next? I'm thinking about capping off all of the ceiling wires except for one black & white combination. Will that do the trick? Any input is appreciated...

p.s. The manufacturer is willing to ship a replacement receiver, which they think is faulty, but I would like to make sure before going through that procedure.

Hook up the black and white on the receiver to the whites and the red, leave blacks capped off as it was wired for the light,
Then the blue, black and white out of the receiver connect to the fans connections. White to white, black to fan wire(usually black)and blue to blue or Black/white for light.
DO NOT connect the neutrals on the receiver together.

Here is how it should be wired:

Receiver "AC Out" set to matching wires from the fan.

Receiver "AC IN" black to ceiling red.

Receiver "AC IN" white to whatever ceiling white the light was connected to (I am assuming they are all joined together).

If that doesn't work you have a faulty receiver.

Thanks guys!

As I did connect the ceiling red to the receiver black and the ceiling whites (bunched together) to the receiver white -- as was the setup with the previous light fxture -- I am going to assume the receiver is non-operational.

Cheers, and thanks again!

Verify pull chains are tried before giving up.
To confirm you did NOT connect the whites with white that exits the receiver out of the receiver, that is only connected to the fans white.
