View Full Version : Deck Repair vs. Replace

I have a deck that was painted by previous owners, the paint is largely all stripped off, and the decking has a lot of grooves in it. My dogs do some damage.

I'm evaluating replacing all of the deck boards vs. any type of repair that may be possible. I don't want to replace any of the railings, so my thoughts were to replace all floor pieces and re seal with a paint color.

Wanted to see if there was any advise on this regarding ways to "re vive" existing wood as well as any matching issues with painting existing railing to new deck boards.

Hi, jdykes!

Is the wood used for the construction of the deck all treated lumber or not? Also, how many coats of paint does it appear to be that are on it that is still remaining, please?

Thanks!

U can use engineered decking. Will be basically maintenance free. Take piece of decking with u when buying paint for railing. If it is not a stock color, paint dept can mix to match.

The other owner probably painted for a reason and you may not want to see why he covered it up. Replacing the boards is not that difficult. You can go PT pine, cedar and plastic type boards like Trex. Its up to you and your pocket book. I would never put down a deck and paint it or use a solid stain.
