What's the big deal? If you have to present your ID, present your ID.

I don't live there but as a US citizen that comes from a latino backround I really wouldn't want to be stopped all the time to show proof that Im a citizen just for looking hispanic.

The new law specifically states that simply "..being stopped all the time..." is not to be done.
The law simply allows for the request for ID. It just enforces existing federal immigration law.
Everyone in the US has to present an ID for lots of situations. Now, however, if you are caught as an illegal alien, you will be correctly processed.

Part of the issue I see, as a former police officer we would stop people who were ( I am sure) illegally here in the US. But we could not do anything, we may even arrest them for some minor crime but could not ask them if they were illegal. If we did find out they were we still could not do anything, since local police were not allowed to do immigration enforcement. And immigration would not do much even when notified. So they go to jail, bail out, and disappear.

So yes when stopped for some other reason, proof of citizenship or proper ID should be asked for. In fact it is normally asked for anyway.

But this still does not deal with the issue ( from what I see) that means enforcement of the immigration laws will be done

Hello u:

I'm all for busting lawbreakers... But, I'm all for doing it LEGALLY. The Fourth Amendment to the Constitution sets the bar at "probable cause" before a cop can search you. This law lowers the bar to "reasonable suspicion", and it's Unconstitutional because of that.

I haven't read the law in its entirety. While I think it's a step somewhat in the right direction, I also think it infringes on the rights of the legal citizens.

My husband is Hispanic, born and raised right here in the States - what if we lived in Arizona and he forgot his driver's license at home? I'd have to go bail him out of jail every time a cop thinks he's here illegally?

Immigration is a mess all by itself. They do nothing to deter people from coming here illegally while our government hands out welfare benefits like it's candy; if something was actually being done to stop the problem, we wouldn't have these stupid laws which are probably "technically" un-Constitutional in the first place.
