The sum of a number and its reciprocal...

This mean a number in the form \frac{x}{y} is added to its reciprocal \frac{y}{x}.

\frac{x}{y} + \frac{y}{x} = \large{5} \frac12

Put the 5 1/2 into improper fraction.

Then add the two fractions. The number will be \frac{x}{y}.
