Hello, A while back I found a website on George N. Steere, (GNS & CO) a jeweler that lived in the early 1900's. I am absolutely in love with and fascinated by his use of dragons, beasts and other creatures in his work. I downloaded every image I could find in my research and I have a nice collection of photos representing his work. The website has disappeared, however, and I cannot find anything else on this artist or the Beaux Arts style jewelry that he created. If anyone knows where I can find more information or has more images of his work, I would be most grateful to view it. Thank you kindly, Jillian Rose

Hi, I have long been a lover of these pieces (long before it became well known and pricey). I, too regret the passing of the Steere website and I referred to it often when trying to identify an unmarked piece. My name is Fran Hartke and I believe many of the pieces on the site were mine which I shared with a jewelry group. I really don't know a lot about this designer other than the brief comments about it in Rainwater's book. I do know that some are unmarked as I have found identical pieces both marked and unmarked. I suspect the small metal "tab" used to mark some of his work has come off on some pieces. Would be happy to share and/or exchange photos. Fran I have a GNS & Co sash pin that belonged to my great Aunt. It has a bat and a snake on it. How can I get more information on this piece?

Geez, I wish I knew more myself. One thing I do know, the mark which is the most common is GNS but I have a few pieces with an earlier mark which is GS. The pieces are lovely and value is pretty easy to judge by the prices they bring on E-Bay. I started collecting before they got so expensive and haven't added many new pieces recently. So far I have necklaces, watch fobs, sash brooches (big and small) and bar pins. He evidently did some stickpins but I've not seen one of those for sale. Warm regards, Fran.
