I have a whirlpool dryer that is 22 mo. Old. I just moved into a house with an upstairs laundry room. It was working fine and then it stopped working, all of a sudden. The light comes on, and I have already tested the door closer, that's not it. We've cleaned out the lint vent and have checked the circuit breaker. We don't know what to do. We do know we want to avoid paying for maintenance, and buying a new dryer if we can. Please help us.

Being a new house that you just moved into, and the dryer was working before you left, it is possible that the outlet may not have been wired correctly. Or perhaps you had to change cords and the cords aren't installed properly.

Some here might say its rare for an outlet not to be wired properly in a new house, I beg to differ. When I moved into this house the dryer outlet wasn't wired properly.
Check for 220 volts between the two hots (red and black) where the cord enters the dryer, check for 110 volts between black and white, and red and white.

I have the same problem like kariroberts, except that I have my whirlpool for 3 years. It was working fine until the last load, but when I added my new load of newly washed sheets, the lights were on but the dryer will not start. Please help. :(

Could be any number of things, lets scratch the surface. When you push the start button does it start and then stop, or is it just completley dead?

It does not start at all.

Well, it could be any number of things. Among the most common would probobly be the door switch is open. Check to make sure the switch is actuating properly.

If that's good then, we will need to start troubleshooting the dryer electrically, if you can scan a picture of the wiring diagram and post it I would be happy to assist.

You might try changing the Thermmal Fuse. I just had the same problem and changed my and it works great!

Hope this helps.

Just a quick add-on to this string... I recently bought a (1972) house and my nearly new dryer didn't turn on when I plugged it in. I followed the advice in this string and checked for both voltages (110v and 220v). Turns out I didn't have 110v going to the dryer (only 220v across red and black, but nothing between red and white or black and white). Long story short, the neutral wire at the wall outlet had somehow become disconnected; once I hooked it back up I was good-to-go. I do wonder how the last guy's dryer worked though.

Thanks for the advice and I hope others will benefit from this.

Cheers,
Dwayne

How do you change the thermal fuse in a dryer? Help!
