I've read several questions on the topic of judgements from creditors freezing or levying bank accounts. Unfortunately, we received some very bad advice from a debt settlement company and allowed a judgement to be put on us. The debt is mine from being unemployed for an extended time but I was trying to dig out and used a debt settlement company to try and begin the process. At the time, I thought that was my only option since the credit card company didn't really care about my situation.

In any event, my question is this: I have an account in another state that is still open and I'm wondering if I can deposit my payroll check to that account. How long does it take for someone to find another account and can they cross state lines with a judgement? I am in the process of getting a lawyer so that I can work with this creditor but in the meantime, I have to feed my children.

Thanks for any advice -- this board seems very helpful!

How long it takes to find the account depends on how hard they look. Its really impossible to say.

Whether they can cross state lines depends on state laws. Some states honor hudgements obtained in other states, some require they be filed in the state where the assets are.
