View Full Version : I left the gas tank open and went through a hands-free car wash.

I have a 2003 BMW in an excellent condition. After buying gas, I decided to get a car-wash at the adjoining hands-free car wash place but forgot to replace the gas tank cap prior to the car wash. Did not discover the open gas tank until I got home. Will there be any damage? Is there anything to do to prevent a possible damage?

I don't think you will have anything to worry about because there is a stopper in the gas opening after you take off the cap (that is pushed aside when you put in the gas nozzle). So not much water and soap could have got in. In any event, it is only water and a bit of soap.

Add some Seafoam carb cleaner. Follow the directions. It will also deal with water.

Add a bottle of Heat to the gas tank. It's made to remove water from the gas.

Thanks. I did not think about that. I had a full gas tank, so there won't be any room anyway if anything did manage to get through.

It doesn't cost much to do as a precaution. The water will settle to the bottom anyway.

So which one is better, the Heat or the Seafoam?
