As a non American, and someone moving to NJ/NY area soon, I was hoping someone could give me information regarding cost of food in supermarkets, and what are the most popular supermarkets for buying food? An example: what would be the average cost of a litre/gallon of milk, a typical loaf of bread, a dozen eggs, 3 lbs of steak or chicken fillets, 3 lbs of salmon or sea-bass? I'm just trying to get an idea of the cost of the weekly shop for two adults, two kids. I appreciate that average can mean different things to different people, and prices change, but I'm just trying to get a ballpark idea.

I'm in California and I think NY might be a little higher, but
Gallon milk 2.99
Bread 1.50
Steak 3-9 dollars a lb depending on what you get.
Sea bass is up there, but well worth it 9 a lb, Salmon is also high.
Dozen eggs 1.50

I shop around and use coupons. If you are going to get the paper, they have a weekly food issue letting you know what's on sale at most stores (I'm assuming this is every where) since it has been for all places I have lived.
Buy your fresh produce at a market and you might be able to save some from the farmers and it's fresher.:)

The main supermarkets in the NY/NJ area area are A&P, Pathmark, Waldbaums and Stop and Shop. All of those have websites where you can browse their circulars. You may need a zipcode for the area to get the correct circulars.
