Keep in mind that, though it is almost necessary to have anti-virus, this will not necessarily speed up your Internet connection.

You will also want to make sure you are free of spyware (I recommend using Malwarebytes and Spybot Search & Destroy).

Ultimately, if you are free of viruses and other such malware (spyware, adware, etc), and your connection is still running slow, then you will want to run a speed test (Speedtest.net - The Global Broadband Speed Test (http://www.speedtest.net)) and compare it to your bill from your ISP to make sure you are getting the speeds which you are paying for.
