v - w = -5 v - 2w = 4

eq 1: v-w=-5v-2w
simplifying: w=6v

eq 2: 5v-2w=4
then substituting 6v in for w
5v-2(6v)=4
-7v=4

v=-4/7 and w=24/7

Uhhh, I think that the actual question was:
v-w=-5

v-2w = 4

The easiest method in this case is the elimination method, here done by subtracting the second equation from the first, giving:

w = -9

Plugging back w, you get:

v - (-9) = -5

v = -14
