I "hijacked" another thread, but I thought I'd make a fresh one of my own. Mods: sorry, couldn't delete my post for some reason.
I am a US Citizen. My spouse is foreign, never been to the US. I have my tax returns done (MFJ) and sitting ready to be mailed. Here is my dilemma:
1) I know that I will send the Federal Return, along with a W-7 & US Embassy notarized passport for my wife, to the Austin ITIN Operation Center. I've put "APPLIED FOR" in her SSN/ITIN box, and they will deal with it. No problem with the Federal Return.
2) I don't know where/how/if to send the State Return. Again, I've put "APPLIED FOR" in her box, but I assume that Fed and State tax people probably do not have any communication with each other, and the State (CA) may reject the return without a valid number.
Are my fears unfounded? Should I attach a copy of my Federal Return to the State return when I send it to the State, or a copy of the W-7 too?
