Hello,
I have been in the US on F-1 visa since Aug. 2004. I have a few concerns regarding filing my tax returns for 2009 and I am hoping I can get some suggestions. This was my situation last year.
1. I was employed at the University of Utah between Jan. to May and from Sep. to Dec.
2. I did an internship in California (while on CPT) during the months June to August, during which I didn't maintain a residence in Utah.
Since I have stayed in the US for more than 5 years on F-1 visa, I think I will henceforth be considered a resident alien for tax purposes. But my concern is regarding my status in the two states - UT and CA.
1. Since I moved out of Utah for 3 months, do I file my returns as a part-time resident of UT and a non-resident of CA?
2. Or am I considered a resident of UT since the move was temporary and I intended to return and hence, file my returns as a resident of UT and a non-resident of CA?
Any inputs will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
