Driving in town, temp gauge showed hot, red warning light came on, pulled over, engine was NOT overheated - could touch radiator hose with hand. Turned key to ign - showed normal temp. Drove car home, temp went below cold. Turned key off - then back on - showed normal temp.

Coolant level is full, heater put out normal heat even when gague said below cold. Thermostat is operating normally, water pump is working - can feel water flowing through radiator hose. Back heater is also putting out heat - which shows cooling system if full and lines have been bled.
