I am looking for a new thermostat for my home heating. I have an oil burner that uses water in baseboards ( I believe hydronic) the current theromstat uses a 12/2 wire that goes to it. This wire has a black, white and nuetral. The current thermostat is very straight forward and these wires screw to the back of it. I want a new thermostat, preferably programmable. What can I use? All my searches of this type of wireing only come up with electric heating systems and I do not have this?

Look over this site and match what you find to the type of voltage your thermostat uses.

You need to check and see what voltage is going to that t-stat, 12 gage wire leads me to believe you have high voltage as opposed to 24 volts, you never know what people have done before you...

The wireing for the system was built with the house in 1970. Unfortuneatly when I was doing construction I did not realize 24 volt was the standard never ran additional wires and only replaced the aluminum wireing that existed with copper. The whole unit is on a high voltage line. Are there thermostats for this type of wiring or do I have to convert to 24 volt. If I convert what do you type of costs are involved, an guestimate would be fine/. I am living on long island , New York.

a fan control center and a 4x4 handy box might work, use the relay to make the hi volt contact and use the transformer to power the low voltage, then you could use a typical programmable t-stat..

No need to change the system type can you tell me some improtant information.
Like
1)Voltage across the wires .
2) Wattage
3) Amps
No need to change the system.
