We had new concrete installed about 8 weeks ago. It was installed at the end of November, beginning of December. It was getting cold and I voiced my concern to our contractor. The subcontractor installed our garage footings, floor and a large section in front of the garage which is NOT flaking or pitting. Then, several weeks later when it was getting cold they installed the last section. About 2 weeks ago it started to flake and pit. The subcontractor said it was caused by salt dripping from our vehicles. We don't leave our vehicles parked on the driveway. He offered to "fix" it in the spring. We would like it replaced. Also, what methods would they use to fix it, and would it last?

Sometimes there are problems with concrete,not only when it is installed in the winter time.

Most times it's the human factor that causes it to fail,but not always.

Yes,salt can really damage the new crete,it wasn't sealed,it might not have been troweled properly,or enough,it might have been too cold for it to set properly,no additive used in the mix(calcium for winter pours)

If you are not satisfied with the work done,make that clear to the contractor,it isn't the sub's job to appease you,it is the contractors.You had the agreement with the contractor,not the sub(I am assuming this)

A possible fix would be to remove the old and replace with new, if you come to an agreement with the workers,you might have to pay for new crete,but not the labor, negotiate your way to an agreement, remember,the customer is always right(not in the how's and whys,but in the fact that you,the customer,aren't happy with the final product and want it fixed.)

Be flexible and you'll get farther than just demanding.Most contractors need a good reputation and recommendations for a good name in the trades,I can't imagine this one being different.
