Why did my dirt bike make a ticking sound as I was riding it?

What kind of bike? And when was the last time you checked the oil, and anti freeze if liqud cooled. Do you race? Need more details to the question and I should be able to better help you because I blew up my bike awhile back and it was making a ticking noise before it blew up and also was falling on its face when I got on it going down a straightaway. My bike was moded and was pushed really hard when my brother and I rode it. Basically just ran out of oil because was getting so hot it was going out the over flow valve and emptying itself but also the valves were shot. Hope this helps need more info though:)
