What the two groups have in common is roots in the Bay Area. They take very different approaches to their material, though. For the Sly side, read my book, "I Want to Take You Higher: The Life and Times of Sly & the Family Stone" (Backbeat Books, 2008, 2009). Oh, and they also shared a manager, Jerry Goldstein, currently the target of a multimillion dollar suit by Sly.
