Our drain backed up into the basement with all of the disgusting contents in it. My husband rented a sewer snake at Home Depot(the large one that plumbers use) and ran it and pulled up some roots etc. It appeared that it had done the job, but a week later the drain backed up again only it was just water. I don't know if this is significant or we were just lucky this time. My husband rented a sewer snake again and pulled up some more roots. He made sure that he ran it as far as it would possibly go, several times. We are still have it back up. I did a load of laundry and went down in the basement and when the washing machine was draining, it was if the water from the washing machine was all coming up through the drain on the basement floor. The washer and dryer are on the main floor.

If you have any suggestions it would be greatly appreciated.

I hope hubby used a cutter tip, (see image) to cut those roots when he snaked the line. Here's a little information on root control.
If you wish to control roots RootX or Robics Foaming Root Killer that contain Dichlobrnic are two products you could try.
A less expensive way would be to call around to garden supply stores and ask for fine grain Copper Sulphate. Put a 1/2 pound in your toilet and flush it down. Repeat in 6 months.
Hope this helps and thank you for rating my answer, Tom
