I am an avid runner and have recently been experiancing an ongoing issue with leg cramps while training. I pay a lot of attention to proper diet, hydration, stretching, etc. but for the past few months, I have been getting severe cramps that force me to stop running. It then feels like a pulled muscle for the next few days. I was advised to take a few supplements, and they appeared to control the problem for a short time, but has once again returned. Any ideas out there?

Magnesium should help tremendously. Foods rich in magnesium are:
Greens, berries, wheat germ, grains, nuts, cornmeal, apples, apricots, oats, pears, pecans, spinach, tofu, lentils, honey, fish, cabbage, avocados, cashews, peas, prunes, chard.

You can also take a magnesium supplement in the right dose. The supplement should really kick in to help ease the muscles.

Some people take potassium and it has helped them too.

Thanks for the suggestion! Magnesium and L-Carnitine are what I started taking, and almost immediately, the problem stopped. However, I am having the issue again, and although it is not as bad, it prevents me from any "serious" training. Any other ideas are greatly appreciated!

Here is a website with a bunch of home remedies... most are just food or pressure points. The supplements I would double check their dosage with a doctor.

Hopefully, you don't have a pulled or torn muscle that needs to heal. Have you talked to a chiropractor or doctor that specializes in sports injuries?

I did see a doctor, and it was he that suggested the supplements. There was no evidence at that time of any "structural" problems. As I stated earlier, the Magnesium and Carnitine seemed to work wonders... for a while! It's starting to look like I may be headed back to the doctor.
