Try replacing the platinum spark plugs (ACDelco only), if they have not been changed in 40,000 miles. Spark is likely attenuated, due to the plugs, and not strong enough to detonate gasoline. This link may help:

Be sure to replace the rear plugs.

Be careful that plug wires are properly seated on spark plugs as your car can end up misfiring or not firing on all cylinders later as this is a problem with this car/engine. This will cause lugging on hard acceleration or on hills. This can also be a sign of problems with your spark plug wires becoming corrorded inside the covering (I have replaced wires twice on 3.4 2002 Alero already by 140,000 km).

It starts only on starting fluid but does it continue to run once the starting fluid has burned?
