I am currently a Help Desk technician at my job, but would like to make extra money. I would like to start an at home help desk buisiness, but am wondering if there are any laws in place or things I need to do legally before I can do so. I have never started a business before so I am also unsure of how to do so.

Before we can answer on specifics of laws we need to know where you are located as AMHD is a Global site.

Hi I am sorry, I forgot to place that information.

I live in Maryland, Montgomery County.

Well if MD is anything like your neighbor to the South, Virginia, where I am you will more than likely need a permit or business license.

Also, while a Federal ID number is not required, I certainly advise you to get one.

As for federal ID number, as long as you aren't hiring employees, I don't see any reason to get one. Your S.S. number will do. Not that I'm advising against getting one - just saying I don't see why it's necessary. You're going to be self-employed, filing a regular old tax form (including a schedule C among other possible stuff), meaning it's kind of just part of your stuff, and it just adds an extra hassle.

(Unless there's something "special" about help desk work, but I don't see why. Although liability insurance might be in order LOL.)
