Father has house with bedroom for the baby and is financially stable. Mother cannot provide financially and lives in a two bedroom house with parents and sleeps in a bedroom with two small kids sleeping in her bed with her. Should the father try to get custody because he has proper living arrangements for this child?

How much custody do you have already ? Are you paying child support ?

To answer it from the law side, there is no reason a father can not try for custody, ( at least joint)
There is nothing wrong with being poor, as long as kids are being well taken care of, the main thing unless there is real neglect, normally she will get at least joint. And there is normally no reason a father can't get joint custody.
** Now if a father has to even ask " if he should try for custody" I am not sure he WANTS custody, he should be fighting for at least joint because it is his child.
Not to have asked for it at first, not to have wanted and fought for it, makes me wonder why now
