Ok, so there's this foreign exchange student in my class who sits in front of me. Ever since we met we've gotten along pretty well and he is so sweet to me (he's quiet around other people though). One day my friend kept teasing me about how much she wants to hook us up, saying that we'd be so cute and things like that right in front of him! When I turn around to see his expression, he just stares and smiles at me every time.. When I am not sitting behind him, I catch him staring/watching me out of the corner of my eye, when I look up he quickly looks away.
A couple days later I walk into class and sit behind him as usual, then he completely turned around and just stared and smiled at me. He was doing that for a few minutes so in my mind I was thinking, "ummm, yes? is there something you need?" until I said hey, then we had a short conversation.. I have no idea why he does this or what to do so I just try to act cool. Any advice?

If he is a foreign exchange student, does he have confidence in himself as a person that speaks English well? Is he a confident person?

He may have differences in how he sees a guy should act around a girl, according to his culture. I have noticed when I studied in another country, some cultures have very shy men that are not outspoken, and then there are other cultures where it is a fun game for men to pursue women.

Study up on what his culture usually does when it comes to courtship. If you already know, then he make lack confidence in being frank.

He is from south Korea, he understands english very well. He is not shy but he can be quiet around people he has not that well acquainted with. Where would I look to study up on his culture concerning courtship?

That's good. As far as looking up his culture, you can study it on websites, ask others that are in his culture, and go to the library. I don't want to recommend any websites, just because it is not politically correct for me to say one person is a certain way because he is from this country. Each person is different, but there are ways of what people are used to in their homeland. There are shy guys everywhere, but it never hurts to have understanding.
