Hello.

My gas furnace does produce heat when it first comes on. But after a few minutes the air turns warm, then looses all its heat. Do I just need a new heating element?

Sorry but I do not have any exact info for that unit except

I believe it has the honeywell smart valve which we call the dumb valve since it has a few problems.

Try moving the wires that are on the valve while the unit is working and see if the unit goes off or when not working goes back on. I remember this being a problem wth all the brands that are under ICP blanket of company's for awhile.

I will attempt to provide as much information for you as possible.

You are correct in suggesting that the valve is a Honeywell Smart "Dumb" valve. I tried moving all visible wires to the valve and noticed no shutoff due to electrical defects. I did notice all burners functioning while the furnace was active. Eventually the burners shut off and the green light on the valve started flashing and the furnace continued to run without burning for about 90 seconds...

I have 11 output vents from the furnace into the rooms of my home. I should note if this may be causative to my circumstance, that I closed off all but two output vents and closed off rooms in the house; in order to focus all heat into two rooms and conserve energy. Last night I closed off 5 of the 11 vents and my two downstairs rooms (were the thermostat is located) that I had closed off were still 7 degrees below the thermostat setting.

1) Could my closure of the vents be causing the problem?

The furnace is designer to provide so many BTU's of heat. When you close off the registers you prevent the furnace from disposing of all the heat generated. No wonder you are having problems. Leave them all open and make sure the filter is clean and the return air is not blocked.
